Okocha wants Nigeria, Ghana reality check

African football legend Austin "Jay Jay" Okocha wants former superpowers, Ghana and Nigeria, to recognize their current position on the continent if they want progress.
The former Super Eagles star has urged the two countries to realize that the gap in quality between themselves and the rest of the continent is rapidly closing.
"I think that both countries are going through a difficult time at the moment and in football, these things do happen," he told Citi FM in Ghana's capital.
While Nigeria ended a 19-year wait for an African Cup only earlier this year, Ghana are yet to win an Afcon - or any major trophy - in 32 years.
For Okocha, the measure of success must surely be trophies, something both nations have desperately lacked even with their decent showings in the World Cup and other regional tournaments.
"However, I believe that we (Nigeria) are gradually getting out of the slump especially having won the last African Nations Cup in South Africa."
"It is all about being patient and trying to find where the problem is and finding a solution."
As a solution, the former Bolton player asked for honest introspection if consistency must be regained.
"For me, I think that both countries must humble themselves and accept that they are not what they used to be. Both Ghana and Nigeria call themselves the giants of African football but look at how long it took Nigeria to win a Nations Cup trophy (after winning it in 1994)."
"How can you be a giant of the sport when you are not consistent?"
Okocha is now living a quiet post-retirement life in Nigeria in addition to making appearances at football-related events around the world.
